The renovated Quarter of Holy Hierarchs of Moscow, named after the eponymous church, is an area where the Nizhny of old is carefully preserved, surrounded by new buildings. We recommend walks along Korolenko, Novaya, Slavyanskaya and Studenaya streets.
In total, there are 26 houses built in the 19th century, many of which are recognized monuments of wooden architecture. Almost forgotten, this quarter got a new lease of life thanks to the Tom Sawyer Fest, a historic environment restoration festival during which volunteers help restore old houses in this area. It hosts exhibitions, tea parties, festivals and film screenings — always involving the residents. The fences have information about the history of the quarter, its architecture, woodcarvings and its residents — Maxim Gorky and Vladimir Korolenko lived here while Feodor Chaliapin and Leonid Andreyev regularly visited.
