This is the last apartment in Nizhny Novgorod where the Peshkovs lived. During that time Maxim Gorky was already «a writer of European renown», his apartment being a real club of intelligentsia, visited by such distinguished guests as Feodor Chaliapin, Leonid Andreyev and Evgeny Chirikov. It was here that Gorky put the finishing touches to his play «The Lower Depths» and began working on his short novel «Mother».
The authentic furnishings are carefully preserved; here you can find the green living room and Chaliapin’s room with some of the singer’s personal items. The children’s room is particularly touching — there is a small workbench used by Maxim Gorky’s son to learn carpentry, toys of Katyusha, the daughter who sadly died of meningitis, and much more.
