If you are walking along Fedorovskogo Embankment, you should turn into Krutoy Lane and have a look at the two-story white-stone house with a gable roof. The exact date of its construction (which is put around the 17th century) and the first owner of the building remain unknown, but it is believed to have been built and owned by Afanasy Olisov, a rich and influential Nizhny Novgorod merchant, who presumably sponsored the construction of the nearby Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos. The house still retains its lovable 'picture-book' exterior due to the stone pattern of the window dressings and the arches of the main entrance. After the Russian Revolution of 1917, it housed the regional scientific and methodological center of folk arts and crafts. It has since been handed over to the Nizhny Novgorod Diocese and is accessible to public. There is a small museum inside the chambers where you can explore the merchant’s bedroom with antique items, beautiful paintings, matryoshka dolls and souvenirs.
