Street Art Route: Part Two

We continue to draw where in Nizhny Novgorod we will see the most interesting objects of street art. The first part of the material can be read here.

«Radiance»

Address: 29B Ilyinskaya str.

Author: Vera Shird

The Nizhny Novgorod artist's work, made as part of the «Mesto» project, is dedicated to a man who strives to create in spite of anything. A female image, anticipating the end of her earthly life, but retaining the inner light. Doves and a white lily flower refer to Christian themes.

Untitled

Address: 1A Sergievskaya str.

Author: Dmitry Kurbatov

Dmitry Kurbatov created a monumental mural inspired by the works of Maria Primachenko, a Ukrainian artist, a representative of the «traditional primitive art». In her works, you can see magic birds, fantastic animals and illustrations to folk tales, depicted in bright colors without perspective and volume. Kurbatov created a homage to the artist's works, consisting of two parts and located at a technical substation.

«God, I'm so Scared»

Address: 12 Plotnichny lane

Author:  Polina Baykova

Most of Polina Baykova's works were created in response to different life situations that happened to the artist or as a result of observing what is happening in the world. The specific thing is that the main characters of her works are dogs. «For the last few years, the title phrase of the work has been haunting me. I hear it from my family, from passersby on the street, it's spinning in my head. And with this fear, life goes on. Why are dogs wearing hats? Because there's a circus all around. Only it's not funny; it's scary.»

«Together»

Address: 1/21A Urozhainy lane

Author: Alexey Kislow (Sevastopol)

The characters in Alexey Kislow's work resemble heroic people from Soviet brutal monuments: warriors, workers, peasants, but they are depicted in pajamas, which makes them less harsh and places them in the plane of the unreal, in a dream, fantasy or reverie. The work invites the viewer to think about whether the characters are together and, if so, with whom and why?

«Regatta»

Address: 10 Suetinskaya str.

Author: Roman Muratkin (Serpukhov)

The location of Roman Muratkin's work for the Mesto Project was the facade of building No. 10 on Suetinskaya street, where the artist Israel Ashkenazi made the first monumental mosaic in the city in 1964. In 2017, the facade of the building was heat-insulated, and this first Gorky mosaic was «hidden» under the insulation. In 2021, Muratkin created the work "Regatta" on this place; it became a kind of artistic reinterpretation of the Soviet monumental work and a continuation of the theme embedded in it.

«Fyodor Letvich» (from the series of works «Residents of Millionka»)

Address: 10 Ilyinskaya Str.

Authors: 33+1 Art Team (Vladivostok)

The artists of the Team 33 +1 did not have the purpose of creating graceful images. On the contrary, the drawing is folk, naive, but very local, born in the streets. In 1505, during the siege of Nizhny Novgorod, Tatars and Nogais settled on the hill next to the Kremlin. According to legend, the khan's tent was located here, and Fyodor Letvich hit it with a well-aimed shot from the Kremlin tower. In memory of defeating the enemy in 1506, Nizhny Novgorod residents built a wooden church at this place and dedicated it to Ilya the Prophet, the heavenly patron saint of gunners.
